Eureka! Workshop

Our lab hosts a 'Light from Lemons' activity where the girls take ordinary fruits and vegetables (ex. lemons, potatotes, oranges etc.) and attempt to make an LED light up using copper and zinc nails. Through a process of trial and error, each team is always able to get the LEDs to work. And then it is off to the races with different permutations. Can we get it brighter? Can we light 2 LEDs? What if we use different fruits or a combination?

Eureka! is a program between Girls inc. and UMass Amherst that supports 8th-12th grade girls to interact in STEM fields and prepare them for college and life success. Every summer the girls come to campus to participate in various acitivities. STEM labs across UMass are able to host workshops where we guide them through hands-on and intriguing experiments
